My undergraduate degree was obtained in psychology at the University of Washington with an emphasis on abnormal psychological functioning of the CNS. I went on to receive a master of education degree in counseling psychology at Seattle Pacific University. The M.Ed. equipped me to discern learning styles per student; understand learning challenges and diagnoses; create a comfortable learning atmosphere for questions and discoveries; and communicate well with teachers, parents, and students of all ages.
All through my college years I worked part-time in early childhood education. This eventually let me to create my own curriculum for young-early readers as well as adults who never quite undertsood phonics. Additionally, the curriculum is facilitative for ESL students. My work writing curriculum has resulted in two self-published children's readers, countless sequential worksheet-packets per subject; and "Executive Functioning" (life-skills organization) pathways for specifically diagnosed referrals.
Since 1992 I have become experienced by assisting over 30 diagnoses which relate to learning difficulties. These include autistic spectrum disorders, dyslexia, dysgraphia, test phobias, binocular dysfunctions, and ADD-type students. Additionally, I have assisted in recovering head trauma or stroke-recovery situations. The ages of students I work with range from preschool through college/adults. While I am able to work at the student's home if needed, I meet students typically for sessions within local libraries.
The best aspect of being a private tutor is watching someone read words for the first time; organize their study schedule so that assignments are turned-in; speak without shyness; or simply get through the day and feel as if they are not sinking but have things under-control. Being able to be a part of life-changing skills is the reason why I prefer "special needs" students.
I reside in Redmond, Washington with my husband of 26 years. We have three daschunds that brighten my life and sit next to me as I write curriculum at the computer. Outside my window is our frog pond which becomes alive with Pacific Chorus Frogs singing most of the day and night from early spring through summer months. The Pacific NW is like a garden to me, with views of mountains and forested areas. The cultural diversity of Eastside Seattle has allowed me to enjoy world-wide friendships.
